How to apply Eye Cream

Eye cream is one of our most asked about skincare products and for good reason! A good eye cream is worth its weight in gold, but having the right one (we’ll go through a few of our favourites a little later in this article) is only beneficial if you’re applying it the right way!

Although Eye Cream is typically thought to be associated with anti-aging (and certainly is as well), it is actually beneficial for most skin types, regardless of age as the skin underneath the eye area tends to be more delicate and often loses hydration faster than other areas making it prone to dryness and irritation.

Here are our top tips when it comes to choosing and applying your eye cream!

When choosing the right eye cream for you, there are a number of things to consider. The first being your desired outcome. If you’re looking to reduce the signs of aging (crow’s feet, fine lines, etc.) you should look for an eye cream that contains Retinol or Peptides. For dark circles, brightening agents like niacinamide or caffeine are what you should look for. Caffeine is also great to help reduce puffiness if that’s your pet peeve!

Here are a few of our top picks:

For Anti-Aging/hydration:

Marine Flower Peptide Eye Cream

Marine Flower Peptide Eye Cream is uniquely formulated for the delicate eye area. This ultra-rich eye cream uses naturally derived plant peptides and innovative algae extracts to reduce the visible signs of aging. Suitable for use day and night, this versatile eye cream provides long-lasting hydration and visibly improves the appearance of wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles.

Lavender Age Corrective Night Eye Cream

Lavender Age Corrective Night Eye Cream is a rich, nourishing eye cream that will help diminish the visible signs of aging overnight. Lavender and evening primrose provide aromatherapy benefits while the unique Anti-Aging Stem Cell Complex fights the appearance of crow’s feet and leaves skin looking radiant.

For Dark Circles:

Wild Plum Eye Cream

Wild Plum Eye Cream from Eminence Organic targets dark eye circles and signs of fatigue with iron-rich wild plum which re-energizes and brightens the look of the eye area.

For Puffiness:

Snow Mushroom Moisture Cloud

Snow Mushroom Moisture Cloud revitalizes the eye area with this luxuriously fluffy eye cream. Super-hydrating snow mushroom provides intense hydration while powerful botanical peptides smooth roughness, decrease puffiness and diminish the appearance of under eye bags to reveal a refreshed appearance.

Combo Products:

A.G.E. Eye Complex

A.G.E. Eye Complex from SkinCeuticals is an advanced anti-wrinkle eye cream that improves the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, and crow’s feet associated with advanced glycation end-products (A.G.E.), a major factor of the natural aging process. This silky eye cream is formulated for the delicate eye area with a potent combination of proxylane, blueberry extract, and a complex of flavonoids and synergistic peptides. Also includes optical diffusers to diffuse light and immediately improve the radiance of tired dull-looking eyes.

Hibiscus Ultra Eye Lift Cream

Hibiscus Ultra Lift Eye Cream is an advanced instant lift fX eye treatment rapidly de-puffs tired eyes, smooths wrinkles and minimizes the appearance of dark under-eye circles. The cooling, stainless steel rollerball applicator massages hibiscus and ice wine actives into the areas around the eye, appearing to instantly tighten and lift the skin.

Patchs Defatigants

Biologique Recherche Patchs Défatigants are pre-impregnated with a formula enriched with anti-puffiness, anti-dark circles and anti-wrinkle active ingredients. Its natural biocellulose support and its “”pinch”” shape adhere perfectly to the eye contour for a global and effective treatment. Immediately, puffiness is reduced, the skin is smoothed and fine lines are less visible for a rested look.

Now, let’s talk about eye cream application!

First off,  when it comes to eye cream, a little goes a long way!  You don’t want to overload the eye as eye creams tend to be more hydrating than regular moisturizers, so you really only need a pea sized amount.

Due to the fragile texture of the under eye skin, using your finger to apply is best practice.  Make sure to wash your hands! Because we are working so closely to the eyes, it’s important to avoid transferring bacteria while applying.

We like to use the back of our hand as a palette to draw the eye cream from, apply a small dab there (pea-sized), then dip your pinky finger into the dollop to create a small semi-circle of dots around the eye area.  Start at the inner edge of your eyebrow leaving small dots of eye cream every 5mm along the orbital bone.  Leave a few millimeters from the lower lash line as eye cream tends to ‘move’ after you apply it due to the natural movements of the eye.

For the outer part of the eye, starting near your temple, repeat the same semi circle pattern, again staying along the orbital bone, staying just under your eye brow. Only apply to the eye lids if the product specifically says to do so.

From here, gently pat the cream into the skin, being careful not to rub or scrub the product into your eye area as this can cause irritation or end up intensifying the issues you’re working to correct.

As with most skincare, consistency is key when it comes to seeing lasting results.  Most eye creams are meant to be applied twice daily, as part of your morning and evening skincare routine.  If once a day is more your speed, take note of the type of cream you’re using.  Eye creams that are meant for brightening or de-puffing are best used in the morning, retinol or anti-aging eye creams are best used at night to allow for maximum absorption while you rest.
