Spring Skincare Edit – How to Refresh Your Routine for Healthy Skin

The winter months can leave your skin feeling dry and dull, but with Spring’s arrival, it’s time to refresh your skincare routine. We spoke with master aesthetician Christine Fader at Spirit Spa about updating your skin routine, the common mistakes clients make and how to focus on skin health from the inside out.

What is a Spring Skincare Edit?

A spring skincare edit is simply a time when both men and women review and organize their skincare products. You want to channel your inner Marie Kondo and ruthlessly edit what products are working vs cluttering your shelf.

“One of the big mistakes I see with skincare is that clients aren’t focussed and can be using 12 different products. They are all great brands, but one treats acne, another treats dry skin, and another focuses on fine lines,” says Christine Fader, an aesthetician at Spirit Spa. “You want to simplify and prioritize your skin health goals and then create a plan that is right for you. That’s where our virtual consultations at Spirit Spa can help.”

Here are Christine’s  four tips to edit your skincare routine for Spring:

Step 1: Spring Clean Your Skincare + Focus On Your Goals

Before you add any new products to your regimen, take stock of what you have and critically assess if this product will make it in your all-star lineup for Spring. Toss any expired products and anything that hasn’t been opened gift to a friend. Write down the products you use every day and why. The next step is to brainstorm your skin health goals. Do you want your skin to look dewier, do you want to boost collagen and improve elasticity, or do you want to get rid of your acne and have a clear complexion? Now that you have done your prep work, you can speak with an aesthetician during a virtual consultation to match your skincare regimen with your goals.

Step 2: Hello Sunscreen! How to Protect Your Skin All Day

Speak with an aesthetician or dermatologist and they will tell you sunscreen should be at the core of your regimen and should be applied year round. In the frigid winter months when the sun has disappeared, it sometimes feels like an unnecessary step. It’s not – but if you have been lax about applying your sunscreen, now is the time to get back into the habit.

“When it comes to sunscreen, I would choose a mineral-based sunscreen because it is better for your skin and the environment. Our clients like Eminence Organic Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 40  because it does double duty. It’s a brightening daily moisturizer complete with natural hydroquinone alternative and SPF 40 that prevents sunburn and minimizes the look of dark spots. But just because you applied sunscreen in the morning doesn’t mean you are protected all day. Reapplying every 2 hours is key! That’s why I love to have Color Science Enviroscreen Protection Brush-on Shield SPF 50 in my purse,” says Fader.

Color Science is obsessively overprotective about preventing skin damage. It is the only brush-on powder sunscreen recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. This 100% mineral formula protects against UVA/UVB, blue HEV light from our devices and is applied like a powder over your makeup. It’s also great and easy to use on children’s faces, neck and ears while you are on the go.

Step 3 Give Your Face a Work Out – Book an LED Facial

Once you have cleaned up your topical skincare regimen, it’s time to go a little deeper and re-energize your skin cells at the molecular level. Our skin cells are made up of ATP, adenosine triphosphate, which uses energy to maintain the skin’s healthy appearance and keep it hydrated and smooth. “As we get older, our ATP declines, creating an energy imbalance which means your skin cells are not working to their full potential. Spirit Spa’s Northern Lights Facial uses LED lightwave to give your skin cells a workout and boost ATP levels,” says Fader. The result? Your skin looks healthier, dewy, firmer, and acne scars and sun damage are less visible.

Step 4 Consider a Skin Supplement

An inside-out approach to beauty is the new trend sweeping the skincare aisle. While topical  creams are essential, today’s consumer is looking for ingestible products to promote their skin health.

“Taking a skin supplement like Bend Beauty every morning with your coffee or smoothie is a must for your overall skin, hair and nail health,” says Fader. ” Bend Beauty’s Renew + Protect is clinically proven to increases elasticity and firmness, hydration, reduces redness and protects against UV-induced sunburn. Our clients rave about this product, and the  before and after’s speak for themselves.”
